At the first-ever European Forum on Environmental Human Rights Defenders in Strasbourg, France, UN High Commissioner Türk emphasized the urgent need for stronger protections. He highlighted Europe’s rapid warming rate, with extreme weather causing thousands of deaths annually, unsafe air for 95% of urban residents, and 80% of habitats in poor condition.
Activists Under Threat
Türk praised environmental defenders for their courageous actions but warned that opponents resort to brutal tactics. He stated, “They kill, abduct, detain, and weaponize laws meant to protect people’s rights.”
Hundreds Killed or Detained
OHCHR recorded nearly 600 environmental defenders killed or disappeared globally in three years. In 55 countries, activists face detention for their work. Türk criticized laws criminalizing peaceful protests under terrorism or crime statutes.
‘Get Low for Climate’ Campaign
Speaking ahead of World Environment Day, UNEP urged immediate climate action. Executive Director Andersen launched a global limbo dance challenge, partnering with DJ Alok and celebrities like Jason Momoa to promote climate solutions.
